How
to Get Indexed on Yahoo
The second most important search
engine to get indexed on is Yahoo. This search engine also
provides the primary search results for All The Web
and Altavista search engines. So when you get indexed
on Yahoo you will automatically find your web site on these
other two search engines also so you can get even more free
traffic from organic search.
For this tutorial we are going to do three
things. Inform Yahoo of the main URL of our web site, add
our sitemap text file so Yahoo can index all of the pages and finally
to authenticate the web site to confirm we are the owners of
the web site and we would like it indexed on Yahoo.
To get started you will need to have a
free Yahoo email account. You can get one easily by clicking
on the mail link on the Yahoo home page. Once you
have your email account and are logged in you just need to
go back to the Yahoo home page. If you scroll down to the
bottom of the page you will see the link Suggest a Site.
Click on this and on the next page click on the link
Submit Your Site For Free.
The top box you will see is the one
where you can add your web site URL. Insert your web site
URL and click on Submit Feed. Once you have done this
just hit the back button to take you back to the previous
page. Now we can add our Yahoo sitemap. If you remember from
the creating sitemaps video tutorial we uploaded a .txt
file. This is the sitemap file we need to add to the second
box where it says Submit Site Feed. The Yahoo sitemap
file must end urllist.txt and it must be located in
your web site root directory. So the url for this box would
be http://www.yourwebsite.com/urllist.txt
Once inserted click Submit Feed and
this will take you to a new page where you can authenticate
your web site. This is a similar procedure as with the
Google sitemap submission except Yahoo includes a string
code inside the page. You can download the html file direct
to your web site folder and upload or you can copy and paste the code into a
new web page on your html editor and insert the string
manually. You can add the meta tag provided inside the html
of the page. I also make the string the page title just to
be sure Yahoo gets it when I authenticate.
Once the file has been upload you can
authenticate the file so that it will be placed in the queue
for Yahoo to come and list your web site and index all of
the pages listed on your sitemap text file. Don't forget
when you add new pages to your web site you will need to
create another fresh sitemap text file. You can do this
online at the XML Sitemap web site resource or you can edit
the text file in notepad by simply adding any new URL's for
Yahoo to index.
If you check back and see an
authentication error just make sure the string Yahoo
provided is in the page you uploaded. If it isn't just
complete the procedure again.
