There has always been a lot of talk online that .com domains will give you a better ranking. That’s not true. It is the on page factors such as web site content and linking structure which gives your web site a better ranking. I would say that having a .com domain does bring with it a sense of authority. A .com domain is the standard leader which is respected by everyone Worldwide so for me it is the premier extension to have. When I am looking for a domain I will always spend more time doing research if I need to, just to get the .com extension.

If the .com domain I want is unavailable then I will look at hyphens as this will often make the .com available and also makes it clearer to search engine spiders what the theme of my web site is. In most cases I would rather buy .com domains with hyphens than purchase the .net version without hyphens.

So if I was looking to buy the domain www.thepokernews.com and this was taken I would gladly look at www.the-poker-news.com as an alternative.

US domains are fine if your business is only targeting the US market and the same goes for .co.uk If your market is global then the .com domain is king! There are other extensions that you will be offered by the domain registrars such as .info, .biz and .org but they do not have the same importance as the .com or .net extensions. Just as a guide I would mark them in this order of importance.

4. .biz
5. .info

It is worth baring in mind that any domain extension can rank well on the search engines providing the web site had good, original content and a targeted linking structure in place. When doing a search for a domain on the Godaddy homepage you bare just presented with the standard search bar. Do the search and Godaddy will also provide you with around 10-alternatives. You need to take the 'smart search' option below the orange search button. Type your chosen domain in here and you will be inundated with a huge list of possible alternatives.

You have complete control over the results by ticking the relevant boxes so you can have prefixes (word before the keyword), suffixes (word after the keyword) and also the option for hyphens and domain extensions. Godaddy is the very best when it comes to buying domain names cheaply. If the domain is available you will find it at Godaddy. Just be careful when checking out of Godaddy. They will tempt you with additional options along the way. Just take your time and make sure you have the right domain, for the period you would like with a renewal option that suits your personal requirements.
